About Us
In 1928, Emil Villa's Hickory Pit opened in Oakland, California, offering scrumptious barbecue and mouthwatering pies. Founded by Italian immigrant Emil Villa, the restaurant quickly became a culinary sensation. Emil's signature California-style barbecue featured succulent, smoky meats and tangy sauces, reflecting his dedication to quality ingredients and time-honored techniques. The delectable pies and desserts drew crowds from near and far, solidifying the restaurant's fame.
As Emil's reputation grew, so did his reach. The Bay Area embraced the deliciousness of Emil Villa's Hickory Pit, and at its peak, nineteen stores were opened throughout California, even reaching Seattle, Washington. However, despite its expansion, the original locations in Livermore, San Leandro, Hayward, and Walnut Creek have stood the test of time. These cherished establishments are still independently owned by families who share Emil's passion for food and camaraderie, continuing to delight patrons with enchanting flavors and an inviting atmosphere.
As we commemorate the 95th anniversary of Emil Villa's Hickory Pit, we not only celebrate the delectable barbecue and pies that brought the community together but also the cherished values of family, passion, and tradition that lie at the core of this establishment. It is a place where generations of families have gathered to share their love for food and each other. Let us raise a glass to Emil Villa, the visionary who started it all, and to the enduring charm of his beloved Hickory Pit. We're Kind of a PIG Deal!
