Let's go back in time, ninety-five years ago. It was 1928 in Oakland, California, and Emil Villa had a dream. He was an immigrant worker from Italy. He was a family man who cooked with his mom and brother. He was a man with a vision; he was to bring mouthwatering, barbecue, and irresistible pies to the people of the Golden State. With passion and a recipe book, Emil embarked on a culinary journey to become the legendary Emil Villa's Hickory Pit.
In the mid-20th century, Emil opened the first of many Hickory Pits in the bustling city of Oakland on Telegraph Ave. Locals quickly fell in love with his signature California-style barbecue, a delightful blend of smoky, tender meats and tangy sauces. Emil's commitment to quality ingredients and time-honored techniques earned him a loyal following, and soon, his fame spread throughout the Bay Area. But what would a barbecue joint be without a bit of sweetness to balance the savory?
Emil Villa's pies and desserts soon became the talk of the town. As Emil Villa's Hickory Pit continued to flourish, several more locations sprouted up throughout the Bay Area, and along the western coast, with 2 locations in Seattle delighting barbecue enthusiasts and fans alike. It wasn't long before the Clorox Company, a household name synonymous with innovation, took notice of the smoky, saucy sensation sweeping the region. They decided to acquire Emil Villa's Hickory Pit, ensuring the legacy would continue for generations. However, as time passed, the franchise experienced a split, giving rise to two distinct entities: Emil Villa's Hickory Pit and the Original Hickory Pit. Both continued to carry on the rich tradition of Emil's delectable barbecue and pies, catering to the diverse tastes of the Bay Area.
Today, only a few of these beloved establishments remain in the Bay Area, located in Livermore, Walnut Creek, Hayward, and San Leandro. Each location is now independently owned, preserving the unique charm and flavors that Emil Villa's Hickory Pit and the Original Hickory Pit have become known for.
